"Turn the Radio On."
Turn the Radio On.

Growing up I remember I had a choice of one AM station or one FM station and that was it up until my middle teens. Today living here I can’t even count the number of stations I could possibly listen to.
My truck has six pre-sets and if I can’t find something to listen to on those stations then I turn it off.
My son, Nikolai wanted a radio in his room last year for bed time so we agreed and gave him an old alarm clock. Somewhere in that time he set what station he wanted to listen to. I walked in their one night and asked what are you listening to? “The news,” he said. Okay, I walked out without further thought. Well after a couple nights of hearing the “news” I stood and listened, he had somehow tuned in Minnesota Public Radio. I said “why are you listening to MPR,” he said, “because I like it.” I couldn’t think of a reason for him not to listen, so I shook my head and left.
Well, after several months of this and also of having to find the station again after he messed with the dial we replaced the old dying clock with a CD player/radio to listen to at night.
Nikolai spent most of the summer with me in the truck to and from work and going to other places and for some reason he always wanted to control the radio and for the most part I didn’t care. Well the next thing I know he’s got MPR on. So we would spend the day listening to their programming. Of course the logical thing to do would be that when he wasn’t riding with me is to change the channel, but the problem with that was he had me starting to like some of the stuff on the air. So I often found myself listening to it even without him in the truck.
Well during the last month he started messing with the stations again and found another program to listen to. This station features a Wednesday Wheeler Dealer program, so he started listening to that.
“Why does he keep saying wheeler dealer,” he asked after hearing it several times the first day. I just informed him that it’s the name of the show and explained what they do. Accepting that he continued listening, and then he started repeating it. “Wheeler Dealer,” he would say often trying to mimic the different ways the guy said it. I thought it was amusing. So every week he would ask when it was going to be on and I would change the dial.
This last week he was off and back to school and I had his little brother replacing him, since Nikolai had me enjoying Wheeler Dealer, I tuned it in. Soon, without on prior coaching he too was saying Wheeler Dealer in a variety of ways.
Later, at home I told him to tell his older brother what he listened to. After a little coaching to remind him he said “Wheeler Dealer.” Soon the pair of them was running around laughing saying “Wheeler Dealer.” Of course that didn’t last long and they were soon on to other things.
I wonder what he will find next to listen to.
