Weekend Filming

Image
Weekend Filming By Allan Olson Marcus and Alivia were being filmed geocaching by Lakeland Tv Common Ground Producer on Geocaching somewhere on a rural road between Laporte and Walker. As with most weekends, the time went by in a blur, much to the disappointment of Nikolai, we didn’t make it back out on the boat fishing yet, but hopefully I will find some evening this week to head out on the big water. Saturday morning, we met Lakeland Tv Common Ground Producer Scott Knudson to do some filming about geocaching for a future show. The morning travels started with right outside their studio filming the kids finding a geocache, we then moved on to downtown Bemidji for a unique cache, headed over east of Laporte to finally locate one that we hadn’t found before and we ended the filming on the shores of Leech Lake with us finding a very tricky cache. I of course wasn’t done, I had a whole list of caches that had potential to show something different about geocaching, but ...

Foiled by Weather Again

Image
If not for the flooding, we would have been standing in a campsite for this picture. As it was, the water had nearly overtaken the entire site and was still rising at a rate of nearly 43,000 cubic feet per second. Despite being forced out a day early, we still had fun Foiled by Weather Again By Allan Olson It appears that this is not the year for camping for this family as once again Mother Nature had a way of interfering with our camping plans once again. This trip was planned for the middle of the week, we left home Tuesday morning by 8 a.m. and we hit the road pulling three canoes, the back of the vehicle packed to the top with food and clothing for seven people, along with paddles and tents. This was the first time in several years that we had pulled a trailer of any sort behind us, as I much prefer that we cram and stuff rather than hauling something behind us. However, this trip was supposed to be about water recreation and the rental fees were a little spendy for ou...

A weekend on the lakes

A weekend on the lakes Pic: Alivia and Abigail on South Twin Lake: By Allan Olson For the most part, our weekend was spent at or near home. It certainly was nice to not need to go out to socialize or work, and just stay close to the house. I stayed in bed until past 8:30 on Saturday morning, a rarity for me. Normally my internal clock says it’s time to get up at 6 a.m., and I have a hard time convincing my internal snooze alarm to leave me alone. I guess I must have needed the extra Zs, because I was able to shut that clock down and get some sleep. Eventually we got into gear with some summer cleaning around the house, trying to remove stuff that has accumulated over the winter and other stuff that we had just hung onto over the last few years. Once my vehicle was fully loaded, I headed for the dump. There was no way I was just going to move it to the garage or another room “...just in case” we might need it again.  Marcus (left) Jayce (cousin) and Nikol...

Get hooked on Fishing!

Myself, nephew Mike and Nikolai survived our first trip fishing last Tuesday, June 28 on South Twin lake. By Allan Olson If it happened to me, it could truly happen to you. What I’m about to share, is very important for those who venture in the great outdoors on a boat with fishing in mind. It might seem a little scary at first, but I’m truly okay and recovering quickly. It finally happened, I ventured out to take my boat out for the first time on Tuesday night, our target destination was South Twin Lake in Beltrami County. I had heard that supposedly the crappies were biting, I had a boat, a fishing license and two eager partners. More on the first adventure just a bit later. The next night our second fishing trip, things were a little scarier for us. I launched the boat on Pimushe Lake, on late Wednesday evening, we were told that we might snag a couple walleye’s and it’s a good crappie lake. So we decided why not give it a shot. The wind was a little rougher a...
