A Busy Month

The birthday kids..... A Busy Month By Allan Olson The summer rush is almost over, with that comes some relief in hopes that maybe some normalcy might return to my life, whatever that might be. This summer has been a crazy mix of fun vacations and just overall busy days and weekends. This year we took more vacations/extended weekends than ever before bringing our kids to different parts of the state and to other states to enjoy their summer vacation. When the teachers ask them what they did this summer, they better have a litany of stuff to say since they were busy all summer long. The last two weekends kept us very busy – the third weekend in August, I was co-host of a geocaching event at Norway Beach, the event went off without a hitch, the weather was warm and if I had a choice, I was much happier with the warm weekend in comparison to last weekend’s cold and damp weather. The event was a lot of fun, I met some new people and visited with some longtime friends, however b...

Montana – Big Sky Country

Image
Here are the kids Abigail, Marcus, Nikolai, nephew Mike and Alivia, at MacDonald Pass, elevation 6,312 feet, west of Helena, Montana on U.S. Route 12. MacDonald Pass is one of three passes (along with Mullan and Priest) on the continental divide used in the 1870s-80s for travel between Helena and Deer Lodge, Montana. By Allan Olson It’s been a crazy whirl wind month and by the time this hits the press there will be only 12 days left of the month, in the first 21 days of this month we’ve been to Montana, helped host a successful geocaching event and celebrated surviving nine years of twins. Our trip to Montana wasn’t one we had originally planned to do, the idea was appealing when we learned of a family reunion there, since my wife and I last visited that big state in 1998 for the same family reunion. In the end, through a variety of circumstances we decided to go, so on August 5, about 6:30 p.m. we set off on the road, we had three adult drivers and five kid...

Nine years in Cass Lake

Nine years in Cass Lake By Allan Olson Its’ crazy how time flies as this month I celebrate working at the Cass Lake Times and reporting the news for its loyal subscribers for the last nine years.   The years of working and writing at the paper have all been different   - of course there are several things over the years that have been largely consistent. I have covered the Chippewa Triathlon for over half of the last nine years, I’ve always covered the school board and other duties have been added as times change – including covering City Council, Cass County Board, more LLBO stories and I’ve been at countless games documenting their stories of the games. Along with that I’m able to cover all the many functions of the fun activities at the school – including the pep fest. I’ve also been privileged to attend a couple state tournament functions for the basketball team and several other exciting sports adventures over the years. I started this adventure in “news” one we...

Summer Company

Summer Company By Allan Olson I guess it’s a good thing that I have a hard time being idle – as this weekend there wasn’t much opportunity to do any “idleness.” I already had a weekend of things planned when late in the weekend I had a call from my cousin – checking to see if we wanted some company – I discussed the plans with my wife – as any smart husband would do and returned the phone call letting him know that they are welcome to come down. Thankfully – they didn’t plan on being at my house too early on Friday as they had a few stops to make – like the extra stops I make traveling places – finding geocaches. Friday was busy at work as I was on the go from the morning till evening finally leaving town sometime after 6:30 p.m. – to my surprise our guests still didn’t beat me home. I had enough time to shed the work clothes before company arrived. Their two kids announced the presence quickly by coming in the house and within seconds it was a mix of noise and chaos as the...
