Cleaning Ditches

Image
Cleaning Ditches By Allan Olson The old adage, April showers bring May flowers might be true, but the April temperatures that coincide with the showers are sure getting old. I’m starting to have some withdrawal of warm temperatures over the last couple weeks as they cold weather days have outnumbered the warm weather days. April is supposed to be spent in the evening and weekends spending the majority of the day outside enjoying the weather and watching baseball or having some campfires in the backyard. Friday night, I got home in time to make supper and relax a little bit before the night time called my name. Saturday morning – I was up at the normal weekday time and woke the kids up at the same time to go help our geocaching group pick ditches between Menahga and Sebeka.   Even though it looked like we would get out of the house at the right time a couple last minute items followed by taking some pics of a bird delayed us by 10 minutes. We finally arrived just after the sc...

Weekend Warm-Up

Weekend Warm-Up By Allan Olson The weekend weather was everything an outdoor enthusiast asked for – little wind, warm temperatures and no rain or snow, yet for some reason, I spent more time indoors than out. Saturday morning the kids and I headed to a dog house building that I was informed of earlier in the week. I wanted the photos for the paper and the kids wanted to be build their mutt a home – which it was unlikely that he would ever use. However, we will never know because the date I was given was wrong and it was on Sunday instead and I knew by the time frame that it wouldn’t work for us. So we took the opportunity to capture some scenery shots and even stumbled across a pheasant – which my co-photographer hurried his shot and only captured one usable image. The rest of the afternoon was spent at home; the kids enjoyed the day outside while I for some reason was tired after a long week and tried taking a nap while they enjoyed the sunny weather. Saturday evening was more...

A Windy Weekend

Image
By Allan Olson For some reason the weekend plans of sleeping late and enjoying the great outdoors were all false delusions of grandeur as I didn’t sleep in past 7 a.m. either day, waking much earlier than the hopeful 8:30 – 9 a.m. like I had foolishly thought I might achieve. Saturday morning my wife headed off to work and then a few hours later I also headed in for a meeting. The plans for the weekend outside were chased away by the wind machine that recently had its switch broken and stuck on full blast and on. Prior to heading to work, I took it upon myself to get some laundry folded, forcing the kids away from their television making them put away clothes and doing some general cleaning up after themselves. I had a productive morning but certainly not one of fun. Abigail, petting Lily (Nik's pony) with her newborn filly - "Lady" nearby.  Saturday evening we made the trek westward to the big town of Bagley to visit the kids pony as one of them had a n...

A Fun (Cold) Weekend

Image
A Fun Cold Weekend By Allan Olson A friend of mine sent me a message early in the week and said he was going to be in the area and asked if I wanted to join him on a geocache hunt on Saturday. We knew it was going to be cold and windy but our plans were to be deep in the forest and we had hoped that would be enough to protect us from the wind of course the plan failed. On Thursday night I was reading one of the previous logs from someone who had found the same set of geocaches that we were aiming for about the same time year. The discovery from reading those logs was the closure of the forest roads during spring break up, that wasn’t something I was expecting. So because of that I contacted the Cass County Land Department to see if those same roads are still closed. The next morning I was informed that yes, they are indeed closed. Since my friend has no cell phone and was at work I left him a message at his home and hoped that he would check it before leaving for the weekend...
