A Family Weekend

A Family Weekend
Abigail enjoyed spending sometime with her Great Grandfather at the family cabin on Friday, July 3 near the Canadian Border.

This weekend we were once again out of town – this time for a family gathering with my wife’s family at the usual gathering spot – a former farm nestled along the Rainy River –a perfect place for family to gather, 4-wheeler, get loud – basically do whatever they want to do without worrying about bothering the neighbors or campground rules.
We arrived north late Thursday evening – but not so late to help my dad with a few items and we even managed to get in a small game of baseball before the evening got very late. During the game Marcus managed to crank off a hit right towards me and through entirely my own fault I missed it. I scrambled after the ball grabbed and proceeded to attempt to tag him out since he kept running for home. I was scrambling towards him, reaching out to tag him, made the tag before he reached home plate and managed to fall in the process – the only problem was in the process I also managed to drop the ball from the glove and he was safe.
The next morning the kids and I helped return things from the garage and barn to my parent’s basement after the flooding and by the afternoon it was time for the family gathering. The remainder of the evening was spent visiting with family in particular my wife’s grandfather who was home again for a couple weeks. A potluck feast was prepared along with a cake and ice cream to celebrate the birthdays of each of the 13 children of her grandfather.  We finally left the farm just before 10 p.m. and headed back to my parents for the evening where we spent another two hours visiting before hitting the bed.
Saturday morning it was off to the parade in the little town of Birchdale and for a little town each of my kids came back with a heaping pile of candy – which I have since put away since they seemed to keep putting their hands on it. We followed the parade up by going in search of a nearby geocache at a lesser known State Park – Franz Jevne.  It took a bit of searching but I was able to get my hands on the cache – sign the log and head back to the cabin. We stayed there for the next few hours before heading back to my parents for the evening to celebrate my dad’s birthday.
For the evening I cooked on the grill an easy meal of hamburgers, hot dogs and brats and later – cake and ice cream were served. Soon it was time to take in the local light show in town over the Bay – which as always did not disappoint and proved once again to be a spectacular show.
Sunday morning – we packed up early and headed home, we unpacked the vehicle made some lunch and I decided to enjoy a Sunday afternoon nap. Immediately after my nap, I started working on my lawn which took on a mind of its own over the last few days we were gone and looked wildly out of control. It took me two hours from start to finish of solid mowing time to get my lawn done – I finished in perfect time as less than 30 minutes later the rains came crashing down.
This week the plans are to stay closer to home and probably do some more work around the house – perhaps I will even get the trimming done completely for the first time all year – but then again – that just might be way more work than necessary.

I hope everyone enjoys their summer vacation and is able to spend some time on the lake and in the woods. Thanks to everyone for reading, and as always, please be safe while enjoying your favorite outdoor recreational activity and on the lakes. Remember to take pictures to preserve a lifetime of memories. Thanks for reading, and have a great week!
