It was another busy weekend for this crazy
family. I covered Summer Fest activities in Cass Lake on Thursday and Friday,
including the spectacular fireworks show on Friday night. I crawled into bed
late after that and was up early again Saturday and right back on the
road.
For the first time in many years, I had to miss
the Saturday parade and Miss Cass Lake events during the Summer Fest activities.
Thankfully, I have a friend who covered those two events for me, so I was able
to head north and attend a family reunion.
Early Saturday morning we were northbound to the
city of Roseau – actually the country area near Roseau. Enroute, we made a stop
in Warroad to do a little grave hunting. My wife, the genealogist, found that a
great-grandmother a couple generations back is buried there, so we detoured in
that direction for a visit to their cemetery. We stopped at the entrance and
looked at the map to find the name we were looking for – that meant for sure the
person was buried where we thought.
My wife wrote the name down, and the six of us
started out in the area we thought it should’ve been. Then we split up, covering
different rows and sections of the cemetery. It wasn’t that large of a place,
and it seemed like we looked at every headstone, even the ones obviously not it,
up and down each row. We looked for about 40 minutes and finally we called it
quits. We will try again another day.
Then, since we were in town, there were several
geocaches that we had yet to find in that small city, so naturally we set forth
on that mission. The kids were allowed out to help, and that was probably a
mistake. We were, after all, heading to a reunion, and I wanted them to look
nice for photos and there they were, crawling around on the ground looking for
geocaches. My wife was the one who called a halt to that, and I ended up only
finding four; bummer! With the search called off, we headed back toward our
original destination, and arrived at my relatives’ home around 11:30 a.m., just
a short distance from the reunion headquarters (a nearby church).
The rest of the day was spent visiting with
family. I was designated the official event photographer, so I captured memories
of people visiting and sharing, as well as some family photos. In all, it was a
fun time. After the reunion, my wife and sister in-law and a couple kids went
back to my parents’ place while my brother and I and a few other kids stayed for
the “after reunion party.” I captured some more photos, visited a little more,
and then it was time to make our way back home.
After picking up the rest of my family we headed
south toward home, arriving at our place after 11 p.m. Somehow during that drive
I took a wrong turn – I still don’t know how I did it – which delayed our
arrival by about 15 minutes.
After running from one place to the next for
almost the entire week, I was so exhausted on Sunday all I could do was snooze –
and I did. That evening I helped with supper, and then Nikolai and I headed to
town for some baseball. This weekend has the promise of being lots of fun again,
so stay tuned.
Please be safe while enjoying your favorite
outdoor recreational activity and on the lakes, and remember to take pictures to
preserve a lifetime of memories. Thanks for reading, and have a great week! For
