It’s all fun and games ...
Alivia didn’t look so happy at the doctors office in her wrapped up arm on Thursday evening. However, her plain brown wrap has since been decorated by friends’ signatures, and her spunk has kept her active.

Our weekend’s excitement started on Thursday – which is technically not the weekend. I went to pick up Alivia from Vacation Bible School and I found her snuggling with someone, crying. She had fallen off the swing set. At first I didn’t think it was a big deal, but I checked her out and she wouldn’t quit crying. I had my suspicions that she may need a visit to the emergency room, so I carried her to the van to snuggle with Bob, and then I went to round up the other three.
Once we got home, I sent her straight to her mother, who made the decision that I had suspected all along – a visit to the doctor was in order. So off they went, while I stayed home with the others. A couple of hours later, they returned with Alivia’s arm all wrapped up and a diagnosis of a “buckle fracture of the wrist,” which is a very common childhood break, according to the doctor. Such an injury might slow some kids down, but this one has decided it’s only going to mildly limit her activities – although for now she needs to stay off the playground equipment. I’m sure in a couple weeks she is going be pretty anxious to get back on the swings or slides, and on her bike, but as I often tell my kids, it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. But that’s also part of growing up and being a kid, right? – having a broken bone every now and then. For Alivia, this is her second one. The first was about six years ago, and also resulted from a mishap on playground equipment.
On Saturday I worked for a few hours early, so the morning was pretty much lost. The afternoon wasn’t that productive, either, but that evening we attended the National Ham Radio Field Day event in Bemidji for a bit and then headed to Lake Bemidji State Park for a cook-off.
The park naturalist, camp hosts and park intern had prepared some delicious food by using a Dutch oven. On the menu for the evening was a pepperoni pizza, an apple cake and baked beans, all prepared in the Dutch oven. Mini-donuts were also served, much to the enjoyment of all those partaking. After the food was gone, we headed for home (and this time I didn’t allow any of the kids to play on the playground).
We did some cleaning upstairs on Sunday and got things looking pretty nice – at least for now! I snuck in an afternoon nap and spent more time watching television than normal. The whole day was spent at home – we didn’t get any geocaching done this weekend. Go figure.
This week is a holiday weekend, and we have no big plans (yet). Our niece has requested that we attend her horse riding demonstration at the Lake of the Woods County Fair the following weekend, so we decided to not head north for Independence Day. This month is going to go fast (it always does, right?) with many plans already made, so perhaps we will just do some geocaching and go for a drive this weekend, and just maybe, we might get some company for our geocaching expedition.
I hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July weekend! Happy Birthday, America!
Please be safe while enjoying your favorite outdoor recreational activity and on the lakes, and remember to take pictures to preserve a lifetime of memories. Thanks for reading, and have a great week! For more of my columns visit: http://allan-crazykids.blogspot.com.
