The Weekend

Abigail and a book she received from Shriners.

By Allan Olson
Once again – we had another weekend – with one day spent – gone all day and the other, spent from the bed, to the chair, to the table, oh and a quick trip to the store.
Saturday morning – the boys had to be in two different directions – Nikolai to St. Cloud for a robotics event, Marcus – to Northome for a Lego Robotics Event – that meant no sleeping in for Dad.
So well before the roosters and the rest of the barnyard animals were awake, we were on the road to town. I told Nikolai, he was responsible to get himself up and his brother, I wasn’t getting up any sooner than I had to. When my alarm woke me out of my slumber at 4:30 a.m. – I looked out my door to the kitchen and saw the boys were at the table eating some food already – I was happy to see that I didn’t have to wake them.
So I grabbed some toast, took the time to brew some tea, started the vehicle and we headed down the road. I dropped Nikolai off first, went back to my office with Marcus – napped for an hour before heading to Teal’s for some donuts and coffee in a bottle.
I got Marcus shipped off and headed home to get my wife and the girls to meet Marcus and the rest of the team in Northome so we could support the team and of course help out if needed.
The day was spent at the small school in that town, with a bunch of middle school students competing with their Lego Robots as well as doing some judging presentation. Unfortunately for the home team, the pesky robot programming failed again this year, despite the fact that it worked just two days prior. I’m pretty sure a gremlin is in control of that thing as it seems to be a common problem.
We finally headed home – much later than intended due to a “hint” by the head lady in charge that we really should stick around. By the end, we were pretty sure she had us and the coach mixed up with another team as there was certainly nothing for the home team to stick around for.
We rushed back home to get Nikolai who by that time had been waiting for us, for at least 30 minutes – but since I have yet to figure out how to clone myself – there wasn’t anything I could do about it.
Late that evening, my niece brought over her kids for the night, due to some concessions obligations for hockey the next day. So they hung out with Marcus and Alivia mostly the rest of that evening and again through the morning and afternoon on Sunday. I got up and made breakfast for the family – French toast and sausage – pretty much my “go to” big breakfast meal on any given weekend and I try to make enough so there’s leftovers.
Since I had finished up all my books finally, I resorted to watching a series online – Longmire. I first tuned into this during deer season – and in my opinion, the story line is poor, the acting is mediocre – but yet for some reason I’m still drawn to watching it. At some point Abigail crawled into our bed, and shoved her way under my covers and I moved over and let her. I was falling asleep and she was going to leave – but instead I gave her the remote – giving her permission to change the show and I dozed for the next hour.
My niece showed up to get the kids, I went to the store to get a couple things, made supper while my wife, did homework with Abigail – I certainly got the better end of that deal.
The weekend itself was rather lackluster, we didn’t get family photos done; we didn’t get a tree – because the place we typically go to a few miles from home is taking a year off – so ultimately we did nothing. The kids did dishes and some other cleaning – but in reality the work that got done was a bare minimum.
This weekend Abigail goes back for a Shriners appointment for her back, I have to go find Santa Clause in Cass Lake on Saturday and my great nieces dance recital on Sunday – sounds like once again, it’s going to be a busy weekend – oh and somehow on Saturday, we’re supposed to do family pics.
Please remember to watch out for the buses that will be carrying our most precious cargo. Also, snap a photo or two to preserve a lifetime of memories. Thanks for reading, and have a great week! Feel free to drop me a line at cltimes1@arvig.net or stop by the office for a visit.
