A Quiet Weekend

By Allan Olson

If I put as many miles on my feet as I did my vehicles, I would be well-qualified to run any marathon. After I turned 16, I avoided biking and running as much as possible, and I still haven’t gotten an urge to take up either of those activities.
Friday night was pretty laid back around our house. I played a dice game with the kids, but other than that, we all spent time doing our own thing. We did do some cleaning right when we got home, trying to get rid of the dirt that tracks in this time of year, and we put away the winter stuff, which means it will probably snow again. The evening also involved my wife taking the girls to a movie.
Saturday was a lot more of the same. I headed out in the morning for a meeting, then followed that up with a geocaching event in Bemidji before heading back home. I arrived just as my wife was leaving to a movie with the boys. I tried to get some pictures of the northern lights that night, but clouds rolled in and any photo opportunity was a bust (unlike Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights).
I spent the rest of Saturday afternoon with the girls. I helped them take care of the neighbor’s dog (in pic) – well to be honest, they did the work and I just walked with them. That evening we all played a game of Yahtzee and called it a day.
Ah, Sunday – the day of rest. I should have stayed in bed until 10 a.m., but it wasn’t meant to be. I got up early, but I was not real active. We had made plans to head to a friend’s sugar camp, but those plans fell through, so my wife and I and my niece and Nikolai headed off to the movies. For several months my wife and I have talked about going to a movie, but we could never find a film we both agreed on. Finally something was on the big screen we both wanted to see – CHIPs. This movie was a hoot – it was stupid funny, but funny, nonetheless.
In the evening, Marcus and Alivia played outside while several of us played Phase 10, and for the second night in a row I was the winner of the table game we played.
The weekend itself was rather boring (see above) but hopefully this week we will find some things a little more exciting to do than just working and/or watching movies. Once again we will be putting on some miles; I know we will be heading north to International Falls for a few hours on Saturday. I will be geocaching with a couple of kids while my wife is at her niece’s baby shower. It’s possible that we might head to a maple sugar camp on Sunday if the weather (and everything else) works out. While it was nice to have a quiet weekend at home (aside from my meeting and the geocaching event), I am looking forward to spending some time having fun outdoors.

Please remember to watch out for the buses that are carrying our most precious cargo. Also snap a photo or two to preserve a lifetime of memories. Thanks for reading, and have a great week! Feel free to drop me a line at cltimes1@arvig.net or stop by the office for a visit.
