Wrestling weekend

Marcus found the last geocache of the afternoon on Sunday, February 26, at Spider Lake PWA in Hubbard County.

Some of the best wrestling action in the state happened right here in Cass Lake this past weekend when the home team BCLB Bears hosted the individual Section 7A meet. The excitement started for me on Friday afternoon, when I watched several good matches between some of our Bears and their tough opponents. When the dust settled on Friday, every local wrestler had advanced to Day Two. The results weren’t quite as solid on Saturday, but the Bears still did pretty darn well, with seven moving on to State.
That was my weekend. I got home too late on Friday night to do much of anything else, and on Saturday I stayed home in the morning. Marcus and I made breakfast, and then I attended a geocaching event for all of about 10 minutes before heading off to take in more grappling action.
The rest of Saturday was spent at the high school watching wrestling. Seven Bears advanced to the state tournament, and there was plenty of good quality wrestling throughout the day. Finally back at home that evening, I kicked back to relax and did not do much of anything.
On Sunday morning, I started in on some work stuff, and got it done by noon. No more work, it was time to play! Marcus, Alivia, my wife and my niece, along with the two dogs, loaded up and we all headed out to find some geocaches on a sunny Sunday afternoon. We started in Bemidji to grab a few items for the evening, and then turned south toward lake country.
Our afternoon travels found us meandering through central Hubbard County, locating Halverson Lake, Thorpe Township, Middle Crooked Lake, East Crooked Lake and Spider Lake, searching for geocaches in all those locations. And I was really glad I had 4-wheel-drive at most of the sites, because the roads into them were pretty sketchy, especially when we took a wrong turn down a really narrow road and needed to back out. When I made the decision to abandon the old minivan with still somewhat decent gas mileage to go all-in on SUVs, I knew I would miss that gas mileage, but I sure don’t miss getting stuck.
It took Marcus until the last cache to actually find one; on this day his younger sister seemed to have the nose for it, making a score at every location. We finally had to ask her to “not look” on two occasions, and on one she still accidentally found it! To her, it was quite humorous; to Marcus, less so.
In all we did pretty well on our geocaching adventure, finding all that we searched for, even with the remaining snow cover hiding a couple just a little bit. We even spotted some deer out browsing in the warm sunshine.
After wandering through the backroads, we eventually hit pavement again (Highway 34) and made our way home, in time for supper and for the kids to get ready for bed.
Life is never dull around here, and I think it’s only going to get busier. We currently only have Nikolai involved in extra-curricular activities, but I find it hard to fathom what it will be like when all four of them are involved in such things.
This looks to be another busy week, and hopefully the weekend will allow for some geocaching again – this time with my cousin and family. It should be a good time, weather permitting.

Please remember to watch out for the buses that are carrying our most precious cargo. Also snap a photo or two to preserve a lifetime of memories. Thanks for reading, and have a great week! Feel free to drop me a line at cltimes1@arvig.net or stop by the office for a visit.
