Summer Fun
Summer Fun
By Allan Olson
Finally, it happened, I finally got my boat licensed and in
the water on its maiden voyage or at least it’s first voyage on over 10 years
when it was last licensed. My wife, for some reason didn’t want to go out with
me on the boat until I had a lesson in handling, due to my inexperience of boat
handling. It just so happened my older brother was going to be staying at my
house Friday evening, so I arranged it with him and we agreed to head out after
he got there.

Originally I wasn’t going to take any kids with me when I
tried for the first time, but ultimately I ended up taking Nikolai and Alivia –
Marcus opted to stay home instead. We headed over to a nearby small lake, I got
it in the water with a little instruction, I had the boat ready, the motor started
like a charm and I checked to make sure we weren’t taking on water at the dock
and we took off – well as fast as we can go with a 15 hp motor. For the next 30 minutes we
cruised all around the lake and the boat performed and handled beautifully, my
brother and Alivia had a water fight during the cruise and it was a great
evening to be on the lake. Then came the challenge, I had to back up to the
trailer to get the boat. I really didn’t do well with that, and finally after
several attempts, I managed to get the boat loaded. For anyone I meet at the
boat ramp, I apologize in advance. The
whole experience was great and I felt like a little kid with a brand new
toy. By the end of the summer, I hope to
have logged many hours on the boat and hopefully land a few fish as well all
visiting some of the many little lakes around the area and possibly a family
outing to Star Island could be in the future.
On Saturday, I spent the day in Cass Lake with Nikolai
taking photos of the Chippewa Triathlon. That afternoon, I made it home, only
to head into Bemidji a short time later for a few errands, including picking up
a new winch rope for the boat and some other supplies. I still need a few other
supplies for the boat but nothing fancy yet, for now, if we drop a line and
catch something, great if not it will still be better than watching the
television. Saturday evening I had hoped to go out for a ride on the boat and
maybe try some fishing, but it didn’t work out so we stayed around the house
instead and played a couple games of rummy.
On Sunday, my wife and I celebrated 17 years of marriage, I
have no idea how the time flew by that fast but it certainly has gone by in a
hurry. The kids were scheduled to go to a friend’s house to play with the
ponies, but the rainy weather put a raincheck on those plans so they had to
stay home. My wife and I to celebrate went to an early movie, had a late lunch
and picked up a few small items for camping and had some brain storming about a
future road trip for the two of us. Once we finally were home I tired reading
for a little while, but decided my eyes were too heavy and a nap was calling,
but even the nap was cut short.
This week I will be celebrating another birthday, Father’s
Day and it, will be our first camping trip of the two planned, followed up by a
quick round trip to Lake of the Woods and back, it’s going to be a long, but
hopefully fun weekend!
Enjoy
your summer, and be sure to snap a photo or two to preserve a lifetime of
memories. Thanks for reading, and have a great week! Feel free to drop me a
line at cltimes1@arvig.net or stop by the
office for a visit.
