Birthday Fun Weekend

Birthday Fun Weekend
By Allan Olson
This weekend was about celebrating Nikolai’s birthday the big #13. The plans for the weekend were set for Saturday and Sunday with bowling and a shooting contest both planned.
On Saturday morning I made the garbage run, picked up my niece and grabbed a few last minute supplies at the store along with a brief stop for some very delicious java. In all the ‘quick’ trip took about two hours and by the time I returned home my brother and sister-in-law had arrived with their three kids to leave for the weekend. I visited with them for a bit before they left, helped my wife a little bit and then left again for work. When I finally returned home a few hours later – I found the kids and my wife playing poker. I found some food and decided to read. The game was eventually abandoned and soon it was my turn to be the party host.
We headed back into town for the rest of the evenings birthday fun. We met another nephew who was late due to a basketball game obligation and headed into the bowling alley. We had reserve the party room earlier in the month and ordered our meal and then descended on the arcade. I played a couple games of air hockey ending up on both the winning and losing end of the deal, I tried my hand at basketball – and failed – I also looked at a couple of other games that I deemed too complicated for me and continued watching the others that I brought with. We also managed to enjoy our meal of pizza and pop before our time was up in the party room and it was time to hit the lanes.
Our original plans was for the glow and bowl room, but several members of the party decided that they would rather not be in that room – I consulted the birthday kid and he was okay with the change of plans, so we grabbed our shoes, found some bowling balls and started chucking them down the lanes. Okay – we really didn’t chuck them, but we certainly weren’t very fluid with them and it seemed pretty evident that nobody in the PBA will be looking for us to join their ranks. I also learned that bowling also apparently uses some let muscles that I’m not used to as two days later, my legs are still a little sore. I guess I should get back to that workout routine – but that is a workout also – what a conundrum.
We got home sometime around 11 p.m. and I was done playing host and was ready for bed. My nephew was unable to stay for the rest of the weekend so he left for home along with his sister that I picked up from her dorm earlier in the day. The remaining kids were sent downstairs to watch a movie and I headed to the bed.
The next morning, my wife and I were up early to make breakfast for the group – only to find out there was no real interest from anyone in eating yet. She went back to bed to sleep and I went to the couch to read. We finally starting the process of waffles, sausage and bacon around 10 and everyone was done eating around 11.
The kids went back downstairs and I went back to my book. At nearly 1 p.m., my brother checked with me to make sure we were still going to meet at 3 p.m. which was a good thing; because I thought I was supposed to leave at 3 p.m. So after a couple reminders to get their stuff ready the three extra guests finally had my vehicle packed and we were ready to go. My brother had a little further to go or just drove a little slower so it gave me plenty of time to search for a geocache. I probably even had time to search for a couple of them, but I wanted to make sure we were in place to meet and for both of us to get home before the roads became really bad – instead of just poor.
Once I was home again I returned to my book, enjoyed supper and returned to my book – determined to finish it – which I finally did about 11 p.m.
Also during the day a friend of Alivia’s stopped by to see if she could come over and play for the afternoon. Since we had no other plans – other than myself taking the other kids home, we decided that it was a good time for them to hang out and play – which they did for about six hours. In all it was a very busy, but fun weekend.
Please remember to watch out for the buses that are carrying our most precious cargo. Also snap a photo or two to preserve a lifetime of memories. Thanks for reading, and have a great week! Feel free to drop me a line at cltimes1@arvig.net or stop by the office for a visit.
