Enjoying the Warm Fall Weather
My thanks to a photographer friend who has many years
more experience than I and was able to capture several
different images for us. I’ve learned over the last few years
that it’s definitely much harder to capture images of your
own family. – Photo Courtesy of Image Photography.
Enjoying the Warm Fall Weather
By Allan Olson
The weather outside was not frightful – in fact it was
rather delightful this past weekend, Saturday had perfect temperatures in the
low 70’s and I pushed up those windows early in the morning and hit the kill
mode on the furnace. While I had hoped to spend the day geocaching the plans
were vetoed and we stayed close to home – after I had already made a run into
Cass Lake and back.
That afternoon I decided to make a run to dump garbage and
Nikolai and I went on a ride on the backroads I had the windows down and
enjoyed the breeze as we traveled slowly on the forest road listening to an
audio book. If I had bothered to get a hun
ting license I would’ve taken a walk
on a couple trails looking for a grouse or two – instead I did my hunting with
my Canon – shooting only fall colors and other scenes of nature. I was hoping
that just maybe I would get a shot of some wildlife but it wasn’t meant to be.
We were gone only about 90 minutes, but it was a peaceful time. When I returned
home I found my book that I’ve been slowly reading and headed to the backyard
to read in the warm fall breeze. Marcus and Alivia decided to enjoy the
outdoors also and grabbed a couple racks and took turns jumping in the leaves
and burying each other in the pile. I decided that I needed a turn so I laid
down in their pile and they buried me from toe to neck in the leaf pile and
then we had a leaf fight.
It was soon time to go in the house and find some food and
enjoy the rest of the evening which ended by playing a game of skip-bo with the
whole family. Nikolai and my wife found themselves on the winning end of the
game and the rest of us were close behind but we were still the losers.
Sunday morning we got up early – we had a professional
photographer friend coming out to try and get some family shots for us. We did
some cleaning and a little baking and he was arrived in plenty of time to take
some great shots in the morning sun. Try as we might – over the last couple
years our “family photos” haven’t been as good as we liked so we thought we
would try this route instead. With his expertise, he was able to capture a
great family image as well as a few other images for the family. After the
photo shoot we decided to have some down time before the rest of our plans for
the day – a trip to Bagley to play with the ponies.
The afternoon went by in a blur as we arrived at our
friend’s house about 2 p.m. and spent the next couple hours letting the kids
groom and ride horses. Abigail set to work on combing a horses mane and tail
while the others helped get the tack ready and doing some other brushing on a
pony. Soon it was time to saddle up and all of them were eager to climb aboard
and did so with little effort.
Then my wife decided that she was going to ride the horse
–something she hadn’t done in many years, so after her ride I decided that if
they can all do it – so can I. So for the first time that I’m aware of I
climbed on a full sized horse and after some instructions, we went for a walk
up and down the driveway and around the yard. I was honestly a little
apprehensive at first, but once I got settled in – it wasn’t too bad. I still
couldn’t imagine galloping across a field on a horse but supposedly it’s not as
uncomfortable as I think.
In all it was a well-rounded weekend with a large majority
of it spent enjoying the fresh air and since we forgot to make supper plans
prior to leaving the house on Sunday night we settled on grabbing some take and
bake pizza.
Please
remember to watch out for the buses that are carrying our most precious cargo. Also snap a
photo or two to preserve a lifetime of memories. Thanks for reading, and have a
great week! Feel free to drop me a line at cltimes1@arvig.net or stop by the
office for a visit.
