A weekend at home
By Allan Olson
It’s been a long time since I could say, I stayed home all weekend, but this weekend as hard as it was, I stayed home all weekend. I left the house briefly on Saturday evening to grab a couple staples from the nearby store but that was it.
It was really hard for me to not go somewhere and do something, more than once I thought about telling everyone to get in the vehicle and let’s go for a drive –preferably in search of a geocache somewhere. However, I let the urge pass me by more than once and continued on the task at hand – the much needed cleaning in our
house. We started the weekend by forcing the kids to get their rooms clean, even though once their rooms are clean it only takes a few moments before it is well on its way to being messed up again.
The other major tasks of the weekend were laundry, dishes and our bedroom. My wife and I spent what seemed like many hours on Saturday and part of Sunday finally tackling our room. All summer we have worked hard at keeping the rest of the house just shy of total chaos to managed chaos but in the process our room bore the consequences and became total chaos.
On Sunday, the day was spent in more leisure, like a long nap on Sunday – we finished our room and continue the process of getting laundry completed – a never ending battle. The kids spent most of Sunday hiding in front of their screens their last weekend of free reign of the screen before the hard nosed parents crack down on their tube time with school beginning this week.
The parents while wanting to kick them out of the house decided to just let them be and interrupt them on as needed basis.
This week we are happy to celebrate the start of school for the kids, it’s been a long and fun summer and hopefully we will have some fun fall weekends left before the cool air settles in for the long duration. However, we are excited that the kids will be back in school and while it does crimp any spur of the moment long weekends it’s for the best.
This week, we will have a second grader, two fourth grade students and one seventh grader. That officially puts my oldest son over half way through his grade school education. It’s flat out scary how fast that time flew by. As for the other three in 10 years my last child will be ready to start their senior year and my middle two as well as my oldest will hopefully be well underway in obtaining a college degree.
This week will be busy – with the start of school, a long weekend and nice weather will hopefully find us taking a trip to Itasca for our first visit of the year and possibly sometime on or maybe just in the water.
School is starting next week for many in the area, so please remember to watch out for the buses that are carrying our most precious cargo. Remember to take pictures to preserve a lifetime of memories. Thanks for reading, and have a great week! Feel free to drop me a line at cltimes1@arvig.net or stop by the office for a visit.
