Summer Weekend Fun

Summer Weekend Fun
By Allan Olson
The weekend was a blast, we as a family were busy all three days of the weekend but, it was a fun three days. It started out with a movie date for my wife and I on Friday as we celebrated another anniversary, my wife’s mom and our nephew came down to stay with the kids while we went out. We took in the movie Spy and left their in stitches, we found a dining establishment had a quick bite to eat and made our way home.
On Saturday, I spent my time covering the Chippewa Triathlon with Nikolai and my nephew Michael hanging out as well. That evening, we filled up the mowers and got started with the mowing, with all three of us doing something to help with the process. We worked until after 8:30 p.m. and still didn’t get the lawn finished, while there was still some daylight at that time; we had an appointment with the fire along with some marshmallows to roast and enjoy. We wound the evening down by the fire until the state insect finally forced us to retreat into less bug free quarters.
Feeling the Love or feeling smothered? I celebrated my birthday with my kids
and a nephew a couple days early on Sunday.
On Sunday, it was finally a day of rest – I managed to not crawl out of bed before 8:30 a.m., it was great. It’s not often I can stay in bed past six and it was nice to finally have the chance to enjoy a few minutes longer of shut-eye. Once I got up, I started to help get things ready for breakfast, frying bacon and sausage. I also roused children and got them working as well. The kids all pitched in and helped with some, but minimal complaining. We all enjoyed a nice Sunday brunch of pancakes and we cleaned up and it was quickly time for our second movie of the weekend, this time all eight of us were going. On the screen was Jurassic World, we purchased tickets and claimed a seat in the crowded theater and sat back to enjoy the show. I was paired next to Abigail who was far more entertaining than the show itself, at times she was mildly concerned but wasn’t bothered by the fact that the large dinosaurs were creating havoc on the screen and having the humans for a snack, it was really quite the opposite when she started counting the ones who perished on the big screen, she lost count after 13 when the casualties started to multiply in large numbers.
With the show credits started appearing on the screen we moved out and made our way towards home, on the evening’s plans was an early birthday meal and cake for myself, I thought since we had a couple guests it would be more fun to celebrate with others. The birthday meal was homemade pizza for dessert, was a German Chocolate Cake with coconut pecan frosting – also made from scratch and it was all made very well.
In addition my wife and kids made my four photo collages with our geocaching adventures as a birthday/father’s day gift.
In all it was a great weekend and fun being with family.
On another note, it was good to see that our state government finally got their act together and compromised to avoid another state government shut down. This means that education will get funded, which in the bills allowed more funding for schools overall and in addition, that means the state parks won’t shut down and cancel my July camping plans, like the previous time they shut down forcing us to scramble for an alternate campground.
Our plans for the weekend, well it’s Father’s Day, so hopefully I will do something with my kids, but first a little work for my father.

I hope everyone enjoys their summer vacation and is able to spend some time on the lake and in the woods. Thanks to everyone for reading, and as always, please be safe while enjoying your favorite outdoor recreational activity and on the lakes. Remember to take pictures to preserve a lifetime of memories. Thanks for reading, and have a great week!
