Weekend Rains

 Weekend Rains
By Allan Olson
It’s official – well maybe not but it could be, we went from a drought to a flood in about a week, while we needed the rain it can at least for a few days take a reprieve and let the ground soak it up. This weekend was certainly a good one to stay inside and that is largely what we did this weekend.
On Saturday morning, we started the weekend by finishing some painting and began the cleaning process. The kids were all assigned jobs and we all some more quickly than others began our tasks.  The morning flew by and I needed to a quick trip into Cass Lake for the firemens open house. Since Alivia was the only one was working study all morning, I decided to take her with. She enjoyed climbing in each of the firetrucks about a hundred times and pulling on the horn. We returned home and then helped with the cleaning process again. I had also contemplated getting on the lawnmower for the first time all season to get some of the high spots in the yard before the rains came but I contemplated too long and the rains came down and now the grass will be even higher before it gets mowed again.
That evening my wife and I enjoyed a night out on the town – we had originally planned to go to a movie but nothing really held out interest for the evening and we just browsed the stores picking up supplies for our upcoming summer camping adventures.  After our night out – we returned home at the late hour of 9:30 p.m. But, we enjoyed our night out all the same walking around the stores without worrying about what kid was fighting or misbehaving, we were on our own schedule and it was a nice change.
On Sunday, the day of rest – I woke up about 8:30 a.m., eventually got up for breakfast before returning to the bed for a mid-morning nap finally forcing myself to get up for the day around noon.  After giving the kids the morning off with us started working on the cleaning process again. By the evening, we had our living room clean for the first time in a full month at least. In the process I also cleaned out my file cabinet of all unnecessary paper and organized it for the first time in a couple years, in addition I cleaned out my desk and sorted through all the various kids projects dating back to when Nikolai was in early elementary school. So in our cleaning process we managed to get most of the upstairs clean and the downstairs. Of course the room that always seems to get lost in the cleaning process is our own room – which will need to be tackled another day.  Sunday evening we enjoyed some homemade pizza with Nikolai handling most of the work with some instruction from mom. We sent the kids to bed a little early and enjoyed the evening of solitude, listening to the rain fall and the frogs croak.
So it was a boring but largely productive weekend, one that was needed with the busy weekend coming up and the busy summer that is approaching fast. We have a full schedule planned with several weekend camping trips and of course lots of geocaching.

Thanks to everyone for reading, and as always, please be safe while enjoying your favorite outdoor recreational activity and on the lakes, and remember to take pictures to preserve a lifetime of memories. Remember to drive safely, and watch out for those buses carrying our children. Thanks for reading, and have a great week! For more of my columns visit: http://allan-crazykids.blogspot.com.
