A quiet – cold weekend

I decided that I needed something from the fridge, when I was almost there, I decided to call Abigail to see if she would get it for me and bring it to me in the bedroom – just on a whim. She bounced up the stairs and did what I asked with a smile and of course more bouncing.

A quiet – cold weekend
By Allan Olson
With only three days left of the month one can only hope that the cold weather that hit us for the last week of the month will be left behind when March brings us longer days and hopefully warmer weather.
The weekend plans were largely nothing, we did some cleaning again – a never ending battle in our house on Saturday morning and some laundry another job that is never done with a busy crazy young family like ours. That afternoon – we didn’t do much, some baking was in the plans but we never got that motivated. I played a game with the kids hiding their stuffed animals around the upstairs. It started out as a joke with Abigail as I had found one of her animals in my room, then I saw that a bunch of her other ones were upstairs as well so I hid them also. This lasted about an hour or so before I was tired of it.
Late that evening we headed into town for a few clothing items for the kids along with some household items. A couple hours later we returned – I was thankful to be out of the stores with the kids and back in the warm house.
The rest of the evening again was spent quietly doing nothing – the kids were enjoying their weekend electronics and mom and I were enjoying not doing anything. At bed time the kids were going to be allowed to watch a movie and go to sleep in the living room until an argument ensued between the boys over who could put the movie in. Obviously they were both tired arguing over something that insignificant so I sent all the kids to beds – without the movie.
I then headed bed – where I tried watching the latest Pawn Stars on DVR but since I started falling asleep I handed the remote to my wife and passed out for the evening.
Sunday – another glamourous chilly day in northern Minnesota – any thoughts of adventuring out for a couple geocaches quickly faded as the temperature read a balmy -28 without the wind chill – a perfect reason to stay indoors. I did venture out briefly to plug in my van – and help Abigail with giving the rabbits some water. I had directed her prior to going out to get some clothes on – but she chose to remain in pajamas – I questioned her and she said, “dad, sometimes a girl just has to stay in her pj’s all day.” Well I really couldn’t argue with her logic and she did stay in her pajamas all day. She also spent her time getting some homework caught up again. She really needed no help – just a little motivation and some spelling help and hopefully she was able to get it all done.
On Sunday, I also managed to start and finish a book by mid-afternoon a feat I haven’t accomplished in far too long. My ham radio book was also staring at me again this day –but once again I never got around to reading another chapter. If I’m ever to get my license – I really need to get cracking on this.
This week is going to busy and it appears at least one unexpected road trip will occur this week. As I learned Saturday morning that my mother’s only living brother passed away so sometime mid-week we will be heading north for a day trip to attend the funeral of my uncle.
Thanks to everyone for reading, and as always, please be safe while enjoying your favorite outdoor recreational activity and on the lakes, and remember to take pictures to preserve a lifetime of memories. Remember to drive safely, and watch out for those buses carrying our children. Thanks for reading, and have a great week! For more of my columns visit: http://allan-crazykids.blogspot.com.
