Graduation Day
Graduation Day
My little girl, ready to walk into school
for the last time as a kindergarten student on Monday morning.

Well, the weekend wasn’t near as eventful as the
previous one, which is good and bad, meaning I didn’t go on any more exploring
trips around Cass County, and I didn’t get any exercise (Good, right?). But I
did manage to hit a couple rummage sales on Saturday and found some geocaching
containers and trade items. I was hoping to find a few clothing items for the
kids, but that was not to be, although they did get a few cheap items. I found a
great deal on a baseball bat for Marcus, and the timing was perfect, since he
was looking at a brand new bat in a store earlier, and it was really
expen$ive.
The family stayed home on Friday night while I
headed to the graduation commencement exercise for Cass Lake-Bena. After the
ceremony, I got my cake (and ate it, too!) I called my wife and suggested we
meet at Shortstop for some ice cream for the kids (well, and for me, too). It’s
been a long winter without ice cream from Shortstop, and it was just as good as
I had remembered. The rest of the evening was spent doing nothing, since it was
nearly bed time.
With this year’s group of graduates gone, it’s
going to be odd starting next year’s sports season and not seeing so many
familiar faces I have come to know over the last several years – but I wish the
best of luck to all of them.
As noted, we hit a couple rummage sales on
Saturday and grabbed a few necessities from the stores, and then made our way
home. The rest of the day was spent trying to get the kids to do some cleaning
and keep them from fighting. I attended an event in Cass Lake on Saturday and, I
purposely left early so I could spend some time straightening my office
(something that gets neglected during the week – sometimes for several weeks).
Afterward I headed home, helped (a bit) with supper, and since my wife went to a
late movie with a friend, I started getting things ready for this weeks’
paper.
Sunday was spent around the house. I made the
kids work in their bedroom, and then they played outside. They lost the
privilege of electronics early in the day when they were fighting about the
computer, and it didn’t help that I was awakened early by someone tattling
because they were on the computer before the pre-determined time of 7 a.m.! We
all enjoyed some potatoes and steak on the grill Sunday night, followed by a
banana cream pie dessert. It made for made for a very ful-filling
evening.
Monday marked another graduation for me – this
time my daughter participated in her own commencement exercises – Kindergarten
Graduation. It doesn’t seem possible that my baby girl is graduating from
kindergarten. When I picked her up from school on Friday last week, she was
wiping tears from her eyes, saying it was her last full day, and how much she
was going to miss her teachers. This is another milestone for our family – it
marks our third child to graduate from Cass Lake-Bena kindergarten, and all
three had the opportunity to be with the same excellent teachers.
Since the weekend was short and unadventurous,
it only seems fitting that my column be as well. I will end with one of my
favorite quotes from that famous philosopher, Dr. Seuss: “With a head on your
shoulders and feet in your shoes, you can do anything you choose.”
Please be safe while enjoying some outdoor
recreation and on the lakes, and remember to take pictures to preserve a
lifetime of memories. Thanks for reading, and have a great week! For more of my
