Another Wintery Weekend

Another Wintery Weekend
Cut: Marcus wanted to learn how to make an omelet on Saturday, so we practiced on mom’s first, and then he helped make his own.

Well, the joke’s on us! The first day of spring (March 20) finally arrived, and while we once had visions of green grass, chirping birds and warmer days – those were, in fact, fantasies, once again postponed by reality. Instead of warmer temperatures, we were greeted with another snow storm. This latest round of heavy, wet snow – a whopping 10 inches – is sure to delay our thaw even further.
Our family had to deal with a power outage for most of Friday. My wife had no power during part of the morning and afternoon hours, and then that evening we lost power for another 3+ hours. Of course, that second power outage came when we had food in the oven – luckily, our pizza was almost cooked and the oven was hot enough to finish the job. The kids were annoyed with not having electricity, since they couldn’t watch TV, and if followed that their parents were soon annoyed since the kids were annoyed, but in the end, we all survived.
Saturday was planned to be a day of cleaning kids rooms and more, but those plans were not fulfilled. We did get the upstairs straightened up again, and I put Nikolai in charge of helping to wash pillows, but we got a late start and I had to take a good nap in the afternoon, so not a lot of progress was made. That evening we broke out a board game – PayDay – that game generally takes a long time when just adults play the game. I committed to playing six months, and after over two hours of play we completed just two months. We saved the data, recording everyone’s money and property values for another day – assuming, of course, that the kids don’t get into the game in the meantime and scatter everything and lose the information.
Some time this weekend was also spent digging into the past. My wife spent hours working on our family tree for my family reunion coming up this summer, tracking down ancestors from “way back.” I spent some time contacting others when we had questions, and helping with what I could. I can go on the ancestry website and look at the tree, but I know better than to try and start messing with the information; I could really get it screwed up.
Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest, but there was no napping for me this day. I prepared some stories for this edition of the paper, and helped with meals during the day. That evening my wife and I worked again on the family tree.
This last month has been really tough for us having to deal with sick kids. Alivia is the latest; she has had pneumonia for the past week. Hopefully she is on the mend soon, and can be heading back to school. Having a sick child is no fun for any parent. Like the rest of you, we are hopeful that spring weather gets here soon so we can crank open the windows to let the fresh air in – and the kids out!
Our plans for this weekend are uncertain. There is a geocaching event in Bemidji this Saturday and next, so that might be an option, but a lot depends on how the family is feeling. And the weather outside, of course.
Please be safe while fishing this season, and remember to take pictures to preserve a lifetime of memories. Also, please watch out for the buses that are transporting our children, and remember to drive safely. Thanks for reading, and have a great week!
