I’m Tired of This!

I’m Tired of This!
By Allan Olson
I’ve used this line for a lot of things, including when the kids are fighting: “Will you quit fighting, I’m tired of this!” or when they are playing instead of doing their work, like cleaning their room.
My latest frustration is with the weather. While I know there isn’t anything I can do about it, even if I yell at it and gripe, it still doesn’t matter. I watched the snow as it started to fall – again – on Sunday evening, and I all I could think is, “I’m tired of this!”
I also know that I’m not alone in that feeling; you know winter has gone on long enough when the kids are tired of it, too.
Look outside, I told the kids, as the snow really started to come down.
“When will it stop?” Alivia said. “I can’t take this snow anymore. I wanna ride bike.”
Nikolai yelled at the snow to go away last week, when there were just a few flurries in the air.
For the last two months, all I’ve heard is “When can I ride my bike?” My answer is, “When the snow melts.” At this rate, it will be June! (Especially when it’s possible that we could have another storm even before this edition of the paper gets printed. Ugh!) On the bright side, it looks like the lawn mowing season will be shorter.
For the most part, our weekend was boring; we didn’t do much for excitement. The kids cleaned their rooms again on Friday, because being the mean parents that we are, we said their rooms had to be cleaned before they could watch any television. On Saturday my wife escaped to see a movie with a friend, and the kids and I stayed home. Since they chose to spend the time fighting, I played the mean parent again and made them all take a time out – in their rooms. Ultimately, it was a double bonus – they quit fighting and I got some quiet time.
We didn’t really do anything on Sunday, either. I took a short drive to the store for milk and turned it into a photo-op exploring drive. I decided that as long as I was out, I would try to find the “burned-out bridge” that I’ve heard about for a few years now. I found the road and followed it as far as it could go, but since I didn’t know how far down the trail the bridge was and I didn’t want to trek across the snow for an unknown distance, I called it quits. I fully intend to head back out there when the weather allows; maybe I’ll hide a geocache in the area while I’m there.
Our only excitement last week came on Wednesday night when my cousin and family dropped over; we had a good time visiting and playing games. The next morning it was time for us to head off to work and school, and our company headed on their way.
This week will again be another week spent in anticipation of the arrival of spring, waiting for the snow to melt and the sports seasons to begin. For now we have no plans for the weekend; our plans for geocaching are on hold until there is a significant snow melt. Like the rest of you – I’m tired of this!
Thanks for reading, and remember to watch out for school buses on the roads; they are carrying a precious cargo – our children. Also please exercise caution when venturing out on the lakes. Thanks for reading, and have a great and safe weekend. For more of my columns visit: http://allan-crazykids.blogspot.com.
