A weekend at home

A weekend at home
By Allan Olson
By my account it was a largely quiet week and a fairly quiet weekend at home.
The week started off with the “meeting of the teachers” on Tuesday and the kids were able to see a few of their friends from last year. New for us this year is Alivia starting pre-school – it’s crazy how time flies. She, of course, was very excited and ready to start school. She came home from her first-day-ever-of-school on Wednesday and immediately went to find mom.
“Mom, mom! School was so much fun today!” she said. She told us all about her new friends, which was everybody in her classroom.
Unfortunately, she also started her first week of September off with a trip to the emergency room after slamming her finger in the door at the house. So, she started her first day of school with a large bandage on her finger.
The first week of school was also remarkably different for Nikolai this year. Of course he has a new teacher but now he knows the staff and has returned to hang out with friends he acquired over the course of his first year at Cass Lake-Bena last year. This year he is not the “new kid” and we’re hoping for a much better beginning.
For Abigail and Marcus they are enjoying the beginning of their year as first graders with many of their friends from last year.
It’s bound to be an interesting school year again for everyone ... hopefully it will be one filled with good memories, lots of fun and some learning.
On Saturday it was time to clean the garage. I enlisted the “help” of the boys for the task and discovered that we should be paying more attention to what the kids are doing in our garage. I found a rope swing tied on the garage rafters, which (thankfully) was only created last weekend and, of course, the kids have been swinging from it. Michael (a nephew) went to check it out and the rope broke, which saved me from climbing up and cutting it down. A while later Abigail came outside to go for a “swing” and was very mad that it was broken. I didn’t have any sympathy for her.
The remainder of the morning was spent cleaning the garage and then ultimately mtaking a run to the nearby transfer station to dispose of the garbage that had accumulated during the summer. Now if the kids keep the bikes out of the way, we can actually park in the garage again.
After my garbage hauling trip, my wife left for town with her mom – leaving me home with five kids ... so I took a nap. I turned the television on to an old sitcom, “Wings” and Abigail came in to watch the show with me.
“I wish baby Korby was here to watch this with us,” she said.
The last time we had had seen the show was when we were watching my little nephew and trying to get him to nap. My only thought was “I’m pretty sure he doesn’t care about the television show” – which I quietly kept to myself.
That evening found us traveling westward for another wedding reception for a friend who had recently married. This one was held in their “new home town” –which was the groom’s home town. Thankfully, the mother-in-law was here to take the kids home early so us parents could stay out a little later.
On Sunday we talked about finishing up looking for the geocaches on the bike trail in Bemidji but that was all we did – talk. The ambition wasn’t there and frankly the desire to take a nap on the cool late summer day was stronger.
This week promises to be another busy week but hopefully we will find time to locate a geocache or two over the weekend.
Please be safe on the lakes – wear your life jacket, keep the kids safe, and remember to take a picture to preserve a lifetime of memories. School has started – so please watch out for buses that are transporting our precious cargo.
Thanks for reading, and have a great week! For more of my columns visit: http://allan-crazykids.blogspot.com.
