Welcome to the world!

Welcome to the world
By Allan Olson
It was another adventurous weekend last weekend as we headed up north to the “old stomping grounds.”
We left our home at about 5 p.m. Friday afternoon under partly cloudy skies with shades of grey. It was a perfect day to travel in the winter – or so we thought.
The journey progressed northbound and as we hit our fueling station, we started to run into a little of the fluffy white stuff that we’ve seen a lot of over the last two weeks (but little of over the course of the winter).
The further north we got, the worse the weather got. At one point, I figured I was going to have to yell at someone for not telling me I was heading straight into a blizzard.
Thankfully, this “storm” was isolated, and we were finally able to get back to cruising speed once again.
We made it to our destination only 15 minutes late for the band concert we had promised to attend. We still made it in time to hear one of our two nieces perform in the concert.
Saturday was spent mostly lounging around my parent’s house. The kids and I played outside for a while. They played on the swingset that Grandpa built for his grandkids. Then I came up with the grand idea to just lie in the snow. Abigail spotted me lying there and tried to help me up. “I can’t get you up,” she said. “I can’t get up,” I said, teasing her. “Then I guess you will have to stay there,” she replied promptly.
The three youngest kids took the opportunity to attack me later after I found a new spot to play in the snow. I threw them off into the deep snow over and over, and they kept coming back for more. As they say, it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Well this time no one got hurt, but one throw wasn’t quite as forceful as I intended and instead of landing on his back in the snow, Marcus got a face full of it, and that pretty much ended that game.
After over a month of waiting, we finally got to meet the newest member of our family. My latest nephew was born in mid-January, and after some critical time in the hospital, he is now a healthy little boy. While he is still at the “boring” stage of life where all they do is eat and sleep and fill a diaper, it was still great to be able to finally introduce ourselves to him. One of the highlights of the trip was torturing my mother by not giving him up so she could hold him again.
In our Duluth trip last month, Abigail refused to do anything else until we located a present for her new baby cousin. Now, when her new cousin arrived, there she was, sound asleep, taking a much-needed nap. I scooped the present up and brought it into the room where she was sleeping to make sure she would be the one to give it to him. Later, I carried this new little bundle of joy into the bedroom, woke her up and showed her who I was holding.
Talk about excited – she popped right up out of bed with a beaming smile and spotted the present right away to give to him.
Of course, she also wanted him to open it, which is a little difficult for a newborn, so she also got the honors of opening his gift from us.
All of our kids showered attention on him, but Abigail probably a bit more than the rest.
This little child never had a moment to himself in the few hours he visited – there was always someone reaching to hold him – if the person holding him was willing to give him up!
We finally made it home early Sunday and enjoyed the rest of our evening, and began preparing for the upcoming hectic week.
Thanks for reading, and have a great week. Remember – take a kid fishing, and watch out for school buses on the road. For more of my columns visit: http://allan-crazykids.blogspot.com.
