Summer fun and work begins
Summer fun and work begins
By Allan Olson
This weekend the weather finally cooperated – it was decent the entire weekend. With the exception of a Saturday road trip to a graduation party, we stayed at home, working on our yard and house. Saturday morning we spent time mowing prior to the road trip.
The youngest three kids all wanted to take turns helping dad again pushing the lawn mower. I know in a few years they will run at the sound of having to actually work.
However, the majority of this weekend they spent it outside despite the bumper crop of mosquitos hovering around our property. They spent their time entertaining themselves (thus making our job easier) playing house, digging in the dirt and running around the yard.
On Sunday afternoon we had to escape the heat and go inside. The youngest ones apparently weren’t affected by the heat, and decided to continue playing outside in the garage.
It seems to me that no matter how many outside toys they have, the inside ones always magically make their way outside, too. Over the course of the weekend, they managed to drag about a quarter of their little people toys onto the deck or into the yard.
In the garage, the dirt on the floor was re-arranged and I think a couple holes were a little deeper than before. I know that some items stored there were moved from where they belonged.
Most kids are pretty good about moving things from their original place and failing to put them away when their done. The problem is, just like when they take their toys outside and think they can leave them in the driveway, or when they are told to put the toys back in the house, they just drop them at the front door.
While we were still inside escaping the heat of the afternoon, I figured I had better walk outside to check on them and see what kind of mischief they might be getting into.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Playing house,” Marcus said. “I’m the dad,” he was quick to add.
Abigail was both the mom and sister, if I understood correctly. Maybe she was suffering from a split personality.
Alivia was either the baby sister or the family pet; I’m not really sure which.
As they play, the roles tend to merge into different personalities, depending on the minute.
Of course, it’s not all sunshine and roses when they are playing, either, as
one could accidentally or maybe even intentionally hurt the other, or just decide to not play at all. Then we have some upset children.
One thing I know for certain is that my kids are, at least in my eyes, quickly growing – something evidenced by having three of the four in school this fall. I’m not sure I’m ready, but I guess I don’t have much choice. As my girls like to say, “I’m not little, I’m big.”
Summer is nearly here, and the days are getting longer and warmer. That’s sure to mean more fun with the family.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a great week.
